The Exhibition “My Child Has a Disability” is currently being held at Yachiyo-midorigaoka (Chiba).

May 22 (Mon) – June 1 (Thu) at AEON Mall Yachiyo-midorigaoka

At AEON Mall Yachiyo-midorigaoka in Chiba, we are currently showcasing the “My Child Has a Disability” Picture Book Contest Exhibition.

My Child Has a Disability” is a picture book for adults written by me, Miki Uchiki, the CEO of Hanahiraku.

This book reflects the despair I felt when my son was diagnosed with a disability, the loneliness I experienced when I envied parents of typical children, the fear I had when I revealed my son’s disability at a parent meeting, and the tears of joy I shed when I felt the warmth of those around me.

It took me four and a half years to accept my son’s disability. This book conveys my struggles, conflicts, pains, reflections, and ultimately, the joy of accepting him. I wrote it with the hope that it would give courage to young parents who are about to share with others that their child has a disability.

The illustrations for this picture book were chosen through an illustration contest held last summer. Forty-eight individuals with disabilities from across the country submitted their works, and the winning illustration was created by Konchi. t, who lives in Aichi Prefecture.

While Konchi. t’s work is truly wonderful, the remaining 47 pieces are also deeply moving and fascinating. I felt they deserved to be seen by as many people as possible, so we are displaying them here.

Although the theme is the same scene, the artistic styles of the works are completely different. It’s amazing how different interpretations of “differences” can be expressed! Even those with no interest in art will find it enjoyable.
